I have a question. How many of you have bought your malaria pills already? I went to the pharmacist the other day with a prescription for malarone and they told me it would be $1200.00 for the whole trip. I know I’ve taken malarone before when I was in Namibia and it works without any side effects, you just need to remember to take one a day. I don’t necessarily want to take a cheaper pill but $1200.00, (though it’s worth not getting malaria), is a bit expensive for my taste! Anyone have any ideas?

  1. Live life on the wildside…take a chance…throw that malaria prescription out the window!!!

  2. I almost threw mine out the window! I had a prescription for malarone also and I said “no freakin way,not worth it!” but my mom insisted it was and offered to pay.
So we settled on 4 months worth instead of 9 months (after Christmas till the end) I figured Jbay isnt exactly a high risk zone. This cut it down to about $600
And Ill be wearing bug spray anyways, eh?

  3. The handbook says if the area where we will be is high in malaria, they would tell us. So far, I haven’t heard from any leader that we will be in a place with a high chance of getting malaria.

  4. I have decided not to take it. The phone nurse of the doctor that I will be going to Monday gave me three different pill options. She said one was real expensive, another pill you couldn’t be out in the sun, and the third could give you hallucinations and crazy dreams. So, based on these possible side effects I won’t be taking it. The nurse did say that many places have the medication over the counter, though she wasn’t sure of the area we will be going to.

  5. Hey. I went to south africa last summer on a safari. I was mostly in swamp lands, too. Anyways, There is an all-natural malaria medicine that we took that you could buy at your local health food store. But I can be a baby and I hate vitamins and anything that has that feeling when you swallow a pill. So, I didnt take any. But I do believe that medicine was substantially cheaper. Look into that maybe. But the second part is for two weeks, I was not on malaria medicine and was A-OK. I’ll look for the name of the all-natural stuff though. okay?

  6. I have a friend that just got back from south africa and he was over there for six months and he didn’t get malaria:)

  7. Malaria meds are definitely not needed while you are in Jeffreys Bay. First, it’s not a malaria risk zone, and second, I probably saw about three mosquitoes in the 9 months I was there! 😉 So, the only time you’ll need it is if you go to a malaria risk zone for your outreach after Christmas.

  8. Sarah,

Go to your health dept for the typhoid shot. And you dont have to get the rabies shot though the health dept will try to convince you to.

  9. I just went to the health department, and they said theyre really low on rabies vaccinations worldwide, and they wont give you a rabies shot until after youve been exposed to it. also, about the malaria meds, my doctor prescribed doxycycline, which he said was really mild and doesnt have really bad side affects.

  10. If i just get a malaria prescription is there a pharmacy there to fill it if i go to a malarious area?

  11. Brittany,

If you decide to take malaria meds-it’s cheaper to get them there according to a couple of leaders. Not to mention, in the states they won’t fill a prescription for malaria meds if it’s over three months. So, you might as well just decide when we get there.

  12. And you won’t need malaria meds in Jeffreys Bay. I wouldn’t recommend taking it, it sometimes messes up your liver as well.

  13. Do we need to bring any kind of antibiotic or bring anything incase we get anything there with the food and water changes? i can’t remember what the travel nurse told me, i went quite awhile ago

  14. I highly recommend getting ciprofloxaci (Cipro)for traveler’s diarrhea. All it requires is a prescription from your doctor and you can get it for free at Meijer. Also, if anyone hasn’t gotten their typhoid shot yet, consider getting it in pill form. It was $53 and it keeps you protected for 5 years vs. the 2 years the shot protects you.

  15. Last question lol. Does AIM supply pillows for training camp? If not should I bring a junk pillow or would my good pillow not get ruined at camp?

  16. AIM does not supply pillows. your pillow shouldn’t get ruined at training. So really its up to you.

  17. Quick question to everyone: (Well pretty much just the females)
Who is bringing a blow dryer and/or straightener and/or curling iron?

If we can all work together and share we don’t all need to pack one. And I don’t even think we will use it very often but it would be nice to have one for the days that we want to be clean and look nice.

  18. Megan – There REALLY isn’t a need to pack a straightener. I promise you that you can do without it for a few months, and it will just take up space in your bag that you can use for other things, like coloring books for the kids. Seriously, you don’t need your straightener.

Let me say too that I understand your desire to look nice. I’m married and my wife enjoys and appreciates being able to look like a lady. I get that. That being said, let me say again that you don’t need a straightener. You will look beautiful without it, I promise.

  19. This has probably already been asked somewhere, but what is the situation going to be for traveling to and from the airports? Like how much room will there be to put suitcases/bags? How many bags is everyone bringing?

  20. There is limited space where you will be living so keep that in mind as you pack. We are providing transportation to and from the airports at all times once in GA until we arrive in Jeffrey’s Bay. You can bring a straightener but no guarantees that you will be able to use them either in Georgia or Jeffrey’s Bay. And as Chris mentioned, you could pack coloring books for little kids instead of a blow dryer or straightener.
